Being Social on Social Media: 5 Engagement Activity Tactics for Your Brand

Updated: May 23, 2023

Social media is more than just creating and implementing a consistent posting strategy - you also need to be engaging with relevant accounts to start conversations and help your brand stand out as a thought leader in your industry.

Engaging with accounts is essentially like saying 'hello' to potential new buyers; they are going to want to see who has liked or commented on their post. If your profile is optimised correctly they are likely to take the next step and hit the follow button back!

Here are 5 engagement tactics that you can do on a daily basis to help you increase your brand engagement and awareness.

1) Use Thought Leaders

Thought leaders are thought leaders for a reason; they are experts in the industry - they usually have significantly large following. For these reasons, they tend to get great engagement; these are on-topic conversations ready-made for you to share your opinions and ideas with relevant people in your industry and ultimately get more eyes on your brand.

Simply search for your key thought leaders and find a particularly well-engaged post. Look for the most relevant comments - the best comments are those that have a question that you can answer. If you are unsure about what to comment, liking those that you believe bring value is your next best action.

You can speed this process up by utilising the features of each social media channel. If you're using Twitter, it is a good idea to save your thought leaders into a Twitter List so that you can find them really quickly! If Instagram is one of your main channels, make sure that you turn on push notifications for these accounts so that you can jump in and join the conversation as soon as they produce content!

2) Find Profiles That Have Recently Engaged

Who are more likely accounts to engage with you than the people that have already engaged with similar accounts?!

Similar to the previous tactic, you can find these accounts by searching for thought leaders or big companies in your industry; finding their most recent posts and clicking on the 'Liked By' button. From here, go down the list and click on each user's profile. Although it is always best to like a relevant photo, liking their first photo will be enough to catch their attention (of course, this only works for accounts that aren't restricted).

You can also do the same for comments on these posts, of course.

3) Search on Key Locations

This is a good tactic if your company is well established in one location or has a product or service that aimed specifically at that location. For example, if you are a small interior designer business proving renovations in your local area, searching for your town/village could be a very good tactic! It is usually best to engage with the most recent posts as opposed to 'Top Posts'; you can easily get lost if the post has thousands or even hundreds of likes and/or comments.

Another way this tactic could be particularly beneficial is if you have a paid media campaign aimed at a particular location. Searching for accounts in this area could be a great way of supporting this campaign to get your brand heard by more people.

4) Follow Key Accounts

It's a common thought for many brands to get a 'good following to follower ratio'. Essentially, this is only a vanity goal and has very little benefit to your business.

You really don't need to go overboard with this and can keep your ego in tact whilst getting some tangible value in return! Be selective; follow the accounts that are likely to be interested in your product or service; look at the keywords in their profile bio and see if they have any related posts to your offering. These are the accounts to be following!

5) Search on Key Hashtags

If you have done your hashtag research correctly, the same hashtags that you're using for your posts are great at finding relevant accounts.

It is worth searching for location-based hashtags; sometimes people will forget to add the location to their post but put that same location into a hashtag instead - it's best to cover all bases!

We hope that you found this useful!

These tactics will save you time when looking to identify the most relevant accounts connected to your brand. Try to set 20 mins aside each day to engage with these types of accounts and watch your social media pages take off!
